Cotton imported into China in the first half of 2004 was found to downgrade generally d in terms of quality. In addition, 87.5 percent of the batches delivered weighed less than they had been supposed to .
As learned from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, more than 1.12 million tons of 2892 batches of cotton import which was worth nearly 1.9 billion USD was checked for the first half of the year. The number of batches, the weight and value of the imports soared 198 percent, 242 percent and 382 percent respectively over the same period of 2003.
Problems were spotted in 2266 batches in terms of quality and in 2447 batches in terms of quantity. 32.47 million USD of indemnity was claimed which was 1.7 percent of the total value of the cotton delivery.
The watchdog is planning measures to stop the situation. It requires continued stringent inspection and prompt claim for indemnity. And it vows to have an effective quality credit evaluation system in place soon to keep dishonest exporters out of the door.
